Privacy Policy

Volumes is a private reading journal. We built it the way we’d want to use it: your library of books and notes lives on your device and in your iCloud account — we never have access to your identity or personal information.

This policy explains exactly what Volumes does and doesn’t do with your data.

What Volumes collects

Volumes collects only what you choose to enter into the app:

  • Books and authors you log
  • Star ratings and notes you write
  • The date of each entry

That’s it. No name, no email, no location, no contacts.

Where your data lives

All journal entries are stored on your device. If you have iCloud enabled, entries are also synced to your private iCloud account so they appear across your Apple devices. This sync is handled entirely by Apple — your data passes through Apple’s iCloud infrastructure, not ours. We do not store your journal on our servers. The only time journal data leaves your device (beyond iCloud sync) is when you use the AI-powered suggestion feature described below.

If you delete the app, your local data is removed. Data in iCloud can be deleted from Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Volumes.

AI-powered suggestions

Volumes includes a “Next Read” feature that uses artificial intelligence to recommend books based on your reading journal. When you use this feature, the following journal data is sent to our server: book titles, authors, star ratings, notes, and entry dates.

Our server forwards this data to Anthropic, a third-party AI provider, to generate your recommendations. No personally identifiable information is included — no name, email, device identifier, or account information is ever sent.

Your journal data is not stored on our server and is not retained by Anthropic after processing. Anthropic does not use API inputs to train its models.

This feature is opt-in. No journal data is sent until you explicitly choose to get suggestions.

Analytics and tracking

Volumes does not include any third-party analytics SDKs, advertising SDKs, or crash-reporting services. We do not track you across apps or websites. We do not use cookies or device identifiers for advertising.

If you have opted in to “Share with App Developers” in iOS Settings, Apple may share anonymized, aggregated diagnostic data with us. You can change this setting at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.

Children’s privacy

Volumes is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any data from children.

Data sharing

We do not sell or rent your data. The only third-party data sharing is described in the AI-powered suggestions section above, where anonymous journal data is sent to Anthropic solely to generate your recommendations.

Your rights

You control your data because it lives on your device and in your iCloud account. You can edit or delete any entry within the app, or remove all data by deleting the app and your Volumes iCloud container.

Users in the European Union (GDPR), the United Kingdom, and California (CCPA) have additional rights regarding personal data. Volumes does not collect personal data that identifies you — these rights are exercised by managing your data directly in the app and on your Apple devices.

Changes to this policy

If we update this policy, we’ll change the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
